Guang Ren
Guang Ren, often going by Ren, is an award-winning producer, writer, and director based in New York, and a co-founder of Obluda Films. After earning a B.A. in Advertising from Lanzhou University, he began his career in Beijing working across film and TV development and market strategy, including roles at iQIYI and China Central Television. He later pursued an M.F.A. in Film at Columbia University, where he studied under producer and professor Maureen A. Ryan.
Ren produces independent narrative and documentary projects, with credits spanning shorts, features, and experimental work. His short film Delay is represented by LightsOn and won the Sonje Award for Best Short Film at the 30th Busan International Film Festival, as well as the Asian Short Film Grand Prix at the Bangkok International Film Festival. He also produced the experimental documentary Ghost of Home, and is currently producing features including Si Ren (in post production) and To Know (in development), while developing a growing slate of new work. He also supported post-production on Rosemead (dir. Eric Lin), which premiered at Tribeca 2025 and international premiered at the 78th Locarno Film Festival.
He himself and His work have been recognized with the Arthur Krim Memorial Producing Award and the Indian Paintbrush Production Grant.
Ren is passionate about using the lens to convey profound ideas and make a positive impact on others, maintaining a steadfast commitment to creative authenticity.
A Producer
- Ren holds an M.F.A. in Film (Creative Producing) at Columbia University under the guidance of Maureen A. Ryan.
- With extensive experience in financing, marketing, PR, and film distribution, Ren excels in budgeting, on-set management, and preparation, and is proficient in MMB, MMS, and the Microsoft Office Suite. Ren is dedicated to bringing creative projects to life with precision and strategic insight.
- His previous work includes Delay, The Left Behind, and Mami, all of which are either in post-production or making their rounds in film festivals. Ren is also actively producing a new feature film, Si Ren, which is currently in post-production.

A Writer/Director
- As a writer and director, Ren specializes in crafting narratives centered around family dynamics. Growing up in China and studying in the U.S., Ren’s diverse cultural background enhances his ability to connect with universal themes that transcend cultural differences.
- His extensive experience includes roles as a director, assistant director (AD), and director of photography (DP), which has strengthened his on-set management skills and storytelling ability.

A Street Photographer
- In addition to film work, Ren is a passionate street photographer, capturing authentic moments with a Canon P and Leica R6.
- This pursuit reflects Ren’s keen eye for detail and a desire to document the everyday beauty in urban life.
- Through photography, Ren explores and communicates personal perspectives, complementing his film work with a unique visual style.
